Invisalign Q&A

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment that uses clear aligners to straighten crooked teeth and correct common bite problems. Made with BPA-free plastic, Invisalign is a custom-made treatment that molds to the exact shape of your teeth. The aligners are thin and clear, so others won’t be able to tell when you’re wearing them.

What can Invisalign treat?

In the past, Invisalign has been an ideal treatment for minor orthodontic concerns. However, advances in orthodontics now allow Invisalign to treat nearly all of the same problems that braces can correct, including:

  • Crooked teeth
  • Gapped teeth
  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Crossbite
  • Open bite
  • Crowded mouth

Invisalign can even correct excessive overjet, which occurs when your upper front teeth jut over your lower teeth.

Is Invisalign better than traditional braces?

Invisalign offers many advantages over traditional braces. When compared to metal braces, clear aligners are:

Invisalign clear aligners are translucent and molded to the shape and size of your teeth. When you smile and speak, others can’t tell you’re wearing Invisalign.

People with braces often complain about cuts and sores on the inside of their cheeks. That happens because the metal brackets and wires can irritate the soft tissues of your mouth. Clear aligners are as smooth as your teeth, so they won’t cause any irritation.

Brushing and flossing with braces is complicated and time-consuming. They’re fixed to your teeth and can be difficult to maneuver, which increases your risk of tooth decay. Clear aligners are removable, so you can take them out to brush and floss as you normally would.

Quick treatment

While braces typically take 18 months to three years to effectively straighten your smile, Invisalign offers comparable results in as little as 6-18 months.

What can I expect from Invisalign treatment?

Invisalign is an entirely digital process that takes advantage of the iTero® oral scanner and patented Invisalign software to create your custom-fit aligners. After a full dental exam that includes X-rays, the team takes digital impressions of your teeth.

The team then uploads these impressions into the Invisalign software to prepare your treatment plan. Finally, they send the plan off to Invisalign to create your new clear aligners.

You should receive a new set of aligners once every two weeks. For the best results, you must wear your aligners for at least 22 hours a day. Each set of aligners gradually shifts your teeth into the correct position, just like braces.

If your treatment plan needs any adjustments, the team can make these changes in the Invisalign software. This means you’ll have shorter, less frequent appointments with Invisalign than with traditional braces.
