How to Get the Most from Your Teeth Whitening Treatment

How to Get the Most from Your Teeth Whitening Treatment

Professional teeth whitening can do wonders for your overall appearance (and even your self-esteem), but unfortunately, teeth whitening results don’t last forever. There are many things you can do to get the most out of each teeth whitening treatment you receive here at IDTC Dental Center in Grand Prairie, Texas.

Below, Dr. Kenneth Higgins shares strategies you can take to extend your teeth whitening treatment results.

1. Maintain a solid at-home oral care routine

Maintaining healthy dental hygiene routines at home can go a long way in extending the results of your whitening treatment. For the best results, keep these tips in mind:

Not only does maintaining oral hygiene help keep your teeth brighter, but it also supports the health of your mouth by reducing your risks of developing gum disease and cavities.

2. Use a straw when possible

Stains accumulate more easily when a stain-inducing food or drink comes in contact with your teeth for prolonged periods. For example, slowly sipping your coffee throughout the morning is more likely to lead to stains than drinking your coffee in one sitting.

You can also reduce the risk of stains by using straws (for iced coffee and iced tea) because this reduces contact between your drink and your teeth.

3. Drink more water especially after meals

Staying hydrated affects your body in many ways. Proper hydration supports healthy immune function, balanced mood and helps your organs function. Drinking water also helps prevent stains from forming on your teeth. That’s because water helps flush away stain-inducing food particles. Curry dishes, tomato-based dishes, balsamic vinegar, soy sauce, tea, and red wine are just a few examples of foods that stain teeth.

Other oral health benefits of drinking water include fewer cavities and fresher breath.

4. Avoid tobacco

Both smoking and chewing tobacco can stain your teeth. To improve the health and appearance of your mouth, consider smoking cessation.

5. Don’t skip your routine dental cleaning

Getting a professional dental cleaning twice a year is crucial for many reasons, but it can also ensure you get the most from your teeth whitening treatment. During a dental cleaning, we remove both tartar and plaque. Both tartar and plaque can build up on your teeth, leaving them looking dull and yellowed.

How long do whitening treatments last?

You can generally expect professional tooth whitening results to last from six months to 1-2 years. Your particular experience with whitening treatments will depend on many factors, including your at-home oral care routine, the type of food and drinks you consume, and if you adopt any stain prevention techniques (like using straws). If you notice your teeth start to dull, it may be time for a touch-up session.
