Help! My Teeth are Yellow

Yellow teeth won’t hurt you, but they can be a cosmetic concern for many people. Stained teeth can quickly zap your confidence whether you’re taking a photo or talking to a coworker. The good news is that you’re not stuck with yellow teeth.

If your pearly whites are not-so-bright, Dr. Kenneth Higgins and our experienced team at IDTC Dental Center in Grand Prairie, Texas, provide customized whitening plans to help you achieve your aesthetic goals.

Below, we share how we can help you brighten your smile here.

What’s behind those stains?

First things first: what is causing your stains? While this doesn’t seem like an important step, it can shape your treatment options. Teeth stains can be extrinsic or intrinsic.

Extrinsic stains affect the outermost layer of your enamel, and they are often caused by food and drinks. The biggest offenders include tea, coffee, soda, curry sauces, and tomato-based sauces.

On the other hand, intrinsic stains develop below the surface of your tooth. This can happen if stain-causing particles seep below the exterior of your tooth and accumulate within the tooth enamel itself. Intrinsic stains can develop as a result of a side effect of a certain type of medication.  Some deep-set stains may not respond to whitening treatments. However, that doesn’t mean you’re out of luck. We’ll explore your options in the next step.

Which cosmetic treatment is right for you?

Maybe you’ve tried over-the-counter whitening treatments, or maybe you haven’t been happy with your whitening rinses and toothpastes. While over-the-counter options are plentiful, their whitening agents aren’t as strong as professional-grade products. Professional in-office teeth whitening treatments produce faster, more noticeable results because of this. Dr. Higgins can brighten your smile without the hassle of messy strips or ill-fitting trays. He uses the powerful combination of whitening agents followed by a special curing light. This helps to remove deep-set stains from your teeth in just one single visit.

Whitening treatments may not be suitable for everyone, though. For example, because intrinsic stains are so deep, whitening treatments may not produce the results you want. Additionally, whitening treatments won’t work on crowns. In these cases, whitening treatments aren’t your only option. Instead, you may prefer veneers. Veneers brighten even the most yellow teeth thanks to the thin porcelain shells that cover your teeth. Dr. Higgins will explore all of your cosmetic options during your consultation.

Keeping your teeth stain-free

Once your teeth are brighter, you probably want to keep them that way. Yellowing can occur as you age, but you can use these strategies to prolong your results as long as possible:

Periodic professional touch-ups can help maintain the dazzling smile you’ve always wanted.
